I had the amazing opportunity to participate in the Celebration of the Hand festival with the Nopalera Artist Collective.
"The newly-formed Nopalera Artist Collective describes their group of creatives as “brown, black, indigenous, migrant artists in Salt Lake City, whose work relates to culture, resistance and the resilience of our people.” The collective aims to amplify the experiences of their members’ communities and empower artists to become self-sustaining. The summer 2018 installation of Celebration of the Hand will include work by eight artists from Nopalera Artist Collective with roots in Central or South America: Andrew Alba, Jorge Arellano, Paula Bravo, Itza Hernandez, Nestor Jimenez, Jazmine Martinez, Ella Mendoza and Lola Reyes. Each artist will create a large work inspired by themes of diversity and the representation of Salt Lake City’s many cultures. Nopalera, or cacti, will be depicted in each piece, serving as a visual connector and a reminder of the collective’s ability to thrive in the face of harsh conditions and adversity." Artist Background
Martinez was born in Los Angeles, California into a Latino household. The Chicana culture is a huge influence in her life and creative development. She celebrates her background while embracing printmaking as a medium.
Throughout the world and across cultures, relief prints have been a catalyst for political, social and educational change. Artists have a unique perspective in relation to their societies and communities. Emulating artists, Jose Guadalupe Posada and Artemino Rodriquez, Martinez incorporates their loose, satirical and whimsical artistic style to comment on issues and situations with her ‘Chicana artistic flavor.’
“While it may seem grandiose and naïve I believe that there is some truth to the idea of creating change, whether it be minuscule or huge.”
I had the amazing opportunity to exhibit my body of work at the Sorenson Unity Center in Salt Lake City. The show was up September 14th-October 16th 2015. It was my first time exhibiting solo and it was definitely a learning experience. I would like to thank everyone who made this possible and I hope that I get another opportunity like this. Below is a gallery of images and some of the work in the show.
